Analytical Chemist
Full Job Description

General Purpose:
We are seeking an Analytical Chemist to perform drinking water and wastewater analysis within a supervised team environment. The role involves all aspects of analysis, including reagent preparation, sample preservation, sample processing, instrument calibration, data interpretation, QA/QC, and results reporting. The Analyst may also provide clients with recommendations, interpretation of results, and guidance on sampling procedures. Safety and adherence to written standard operating procedures are essential, particularly when working with hazardous and corrosive chemicals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Perform analyses of a wide range of chemical, physical, and microbiological samples using approved standard laboratory methods.

• Schedule and prioritize sample analyses.

• Prepare and preserve samples for both routine and special analyses.

• Calibrate, operate, and maintain laboratory equipment such as autoanalyzers, pH meters, balances, autoclaves, incubators, and other instruments.

• Troubleshoot and repair equipment as needed.

• Document, interpret, and verify all analytical data.

• Maintain accurate laboratory records and standard operating procedures.

• Perform routine and complex laboratory calculations.

• Prepare solutions, reagents, and standards for all analyses.

• Validate reported results through proper quality assurance/quality control procedures.

• Analyze performance evaluation samples.

• Ensure laboratory safety compliance, including management of MSDS documentation.

• Complete other tasks as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

• Bachelor's degree preferred-major in Chemistry or related field (inorganic emphasis).

• Additional coursework in microbiology, statistics, math, public health, EPA/Standard methods, instrumentation, or water/wastewater treatment is a plus.

Experience:

• At least 1 year of experience in drinking water and wastewater analysis preferred.

• Familiarity with laboratory instruments such as pH meters, turbidimeters, spectrophotometers, and balances required.

• Experience with advanced instrumentation such as flow injection colorimeters, atomic absorption spectrophotometers, graphite furnace AA, and ion chromatographs is desirable.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Strong understanding of inorganic and analytical chemistry, formulas, equations, and computations.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.

• Skilled in laboratory techniques and use/repair of lab equipment.

• Ability to read and interpret charts, graphs, and formulas.

• Capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

• Ability to follow instructions and maintain effective working relationships.

Tools and Equipment Used:
Laboratory equipment (pH meters, spectrophotometers, balances, pipettors, dissolved oxygen meters), advanced instrumentation (atomic absorption spectrophotometer, ion chromatograph, graphite furnace AA, etc.), computers, calculators, and general lab tools.

Physical Demands:

• Regular use of hands for handling lab equipment and materials.

• Frequent sitting, standing, walking, talking, and hearing.

• Occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, or crawling.

• Ability to lift/move up to 10 pounds.

• Specific vision requirements include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
