Position Summary

The Designer II will focus on civil-based AutoCAD design work related to outside plant (OSP) cable infrastructure. This includes the development of aerial and underground utility plans, as well as creating construction and permit-ready drawing packages. The ideal candidate will have working experience with local and county-level design standards, with the ability to execute designs accurately and efficiently to meet strict deadlines.

Key Responsibilities

• Produce detailed permit drawings aligned with municipal and agency standards.
• Conduct utility research using GIS systems, Google Earth, and data gathered by fielding teams.
• Collaborate with internal engineering and aerial design departments to ensure cohesive fiber optic network plans.
• Review redline feedback and make accurate revisions with minimal error.
• Create or revise civil drawings for work performed in the public right-of-way.
• Interpret and apply building codes, survey data, and regulatory requirements to each project.
• Design traffic control plans in accordance with WATCH and MUTCD standards.
• Mentor junior-level designers or trainees when needed.
• Assist with high-level route planning and conduct basic quality control checks on deliverables.
• Work overtime as needed to support client deadlines.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Skills

• High School Diploma or equivalent required; additional education preferred.
• 1.5+ years of hands-on AutoCAD experience.
• Strong working knowledge of OSP telecom infrastructure, conduit design, fiber routing, manholes, and hand holes.
• Familiarity with encroachment permits, right-of-way and easement issues, and traffic control regulations, including Caltrans and UPRR.
• Ability to read and interpret utility prints, parcel maps, and as-built documentation.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
• Strong analytical thinking and ability to work independently.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook).

Physical Requirements

• Ability to sit for extended periods and work at a computer.
• Occasional lifting of up to 15 pounds may be required.
