Overview

This internship supports the Education Data Analysts series at the Vermont Agency of Education, with a specific focus on chronic absenteeism. Interns will gain professional experience in data collection, validation, analysis, and reporting. This role emphasizes hands-on learning in data quality processes, research methods, and public education systems, with a strong partnership between AOE and University of Vermont (UVM) faculty. Much of the data handled is sensitive and confidential, and is subject to FERPA regulations.


Interns will join a collaborative team and contribute to foundational data work that supports statewide reporting and educational policy.

General Responsibilities:

  • Learn and apply data validation methods using tools such as SQL, Python, and R.
  • Work with data sourced from the Ed-Fi API.
  • Support efforts to ensure attendance data is clean, accurate, and ready for reporting.
  • Gain experience presenting data requirements and answering field questions.
  • Conduct basic analysis such as student counts and trend identification.
  • Apply nuanced business rules for attendance data at different organizational levels.
  • Explore relationships between absenteeism and other variables (e.g., academic performance, grade progression, discipline records).
  • Write and maintain scripts used in data processing and analysis.
  • Assist with data collection, quality assurance, and maintenance related to education data.
  • Develop and implement scalable data validation checks.
  • Develop code for analysis of data, analyze and report on data findings.
  • Create data products such as surveys, dashboards, and reports for both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with team members to ensure project alignment with divisional goals.
  • Use shared project management tools (e.g., MS Azure DevOps) to document procedures and tasks.
  • Support the development of legislative reports and other official communications.
  • Test systems and report bugs related to education data environments.

This internship will require approximately 15 to 20 hours of work per week, with two full days per week preferred. The position will work up to 1,280 hours annually and students may exceed 20 hours per week during academic breaks.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be currently pursing a Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, data analytics, or closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Understanding of data science principles including data acquisition, cleaning, and maintenance.
Familiarity with scripting and data tools such as SQL, R, Python.
Ability to maintain confidentiality in compliance with FERPA.
Willingness to learn and apply data quality methods and reporting standards.
Team collaboration skills, including participating in meetings and cross-divisional work.
Ability to document processes and follow standard operating procedures.
Strong communication skills, including explaining technical data issues to non-technical audiences.
